Its thirteen songs are power-packed with deep, theologically rich lyrics, and lively and beautiful contemporary music. The title is from Psalm 63, where David declares that the Lord's love is "better than life." From the cover insert, co-producer Brian Mattson writes:

"Your love is better than life" (Psalm 63:3). David had but a mere taste in the desert of Judah; Jesus of Nazareth knew the full, stark reality on the hill of Golgotha. He had heard the thunderous declaration of his Father: "This is my Son, whom I love, with him I am well pleased." That timely reminder of His Father's love—and the accompanying power of the Holy Spirit—enabled him to "become obedient unto death - even death on a cross!" (Philippians 2:8). His Father's loving will for him was, truly, better than life. So the love of God in the person and work of the Lord Jesus in turn becomes for us "better than life." These songs are our meditations on how high and how wide, and how long and deep is the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord; a love that is better than life. That is a message for the journey, as we too seek to take up our cross to follow Jesus, who leads us as "captives in his train" (Ephesians 4:8).

Poirier (1953-) was born in Santa Rosa, California, and was educated at Chico State University (CA). Her involvement in church music began as a child in her father's Assemblies of God congregation. From youth on, she has been leading worship at the piano and writing music. Only in the past decade, however, has she begun to seriously apply herself to developing doctrinally sound, singable music for congregations.

The primary venue for Pear Tree Music is in the worship services at Rocky Mountain Community Church in Billings, Montana. Trudy’s husband, Alfred Poirier, serves as pastor, and she enjoys writing music to complement his preaching. She also has the privilege of leading the worship team Captive Thought. Together, they "sing a new song, play skillfully, and shout for joy" (Psalm 33:3) on the piano, strings, guitars, flute, and percussion.

The name Pear Tree Music comes from her married name, Poirier, which means "pear tree" in French. Trudy teaches piano lessons and enjoys art and literature. She and her husband live in Billings, Montana. They have three daughters and three grandchildren.

Many of the great hymn writers in history preached prolifically; many of the great hymn writers in history suffered greatly. These circumstances produced a treasury of praise to God. Music complements theology; music adorns the preaching of the Word in a worship service; music ministers to the heart.

Music is a language that is living, breathing, changing. Because music is not static, older music can become dated and dull-sounding to modern ears. Each culture molds and shapes the sensibilities and influences the criteria for what makes music good and pleasing.

Trudy began to write music in response to two observations: First, the theology promoted by many contemporary choruses often falls short of a careful, biblical standard. Second, the music of theologically rich hymns is sometimes uninspiring or hard for congregations to sing.

It is Trudy’s earnest desire that her music would assist the Body of Christ in worship, that the church might be "built up until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God and become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ" (Ephesians 4:12-13). As Christians meditate on the grace of God lavished on them through Jesus Christ, it is her prayer that they will be stirred to “Worship God!” (Revelation 19:10, 22:9).
